The Old Fashioned sandwich was born 50 years ago when the Staehnke
family created it to meet the needs of Paly and Stanford students, as
well as the families residing on the peninsula. Only the highest quality
of ingredients is used: bread baked fresh daily, top-shelf meats and
cheeses, and fresh produce are the standard.
The original sandwich consisted of just 3 items: meat, bread, and the
original spread for which the Cheese House has become famous. Over the
years Richard Staehnke added pickle and swiss cheese to the sandwich,
but in homage to the original, you will find our pre-made roast-beef and
roast turkey to be exactly as it was in the beginning (meat, spread,
and bread only). Another addition to the menu Richard made was to offer
"The Works" which is a dressed-up version of the Old Fashioned including
pepperoncini, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and sprouts.
When the Hiken family took ownership in 2007, Noah wanted to address the
needs of the vegetarian community so he added a 2 more sandwiches: the
Italian Veggie-ball (a hot sandwich) which includes baked, spiced tofu
balls, marinara, mozzarella, lettuce, onion, pickles, and peppers. And,
