Yonten Raza was born in Nepal where her Tibetan parents had immigrated in 1959. In 1985, when she was 18, she came to the U.S. with the help of American friends, initially living in Berkeley and working as an au pair. Her father was a small businessman in Nepal, so it was natural that she should consider starting her own business. A friend at Stanford suggested Menlo Park as a good location, so 13 years ago she opened dolma Handicrafts on Santa Cruz Avenue featuring Tibetan handicrafts that she personally selects and brings to the U.S. Later she added dolma Tibetan Carpets also on Santa Cruz Avenue.

Today Yonten has 4 handicraft shops – , Palo Alto, Menlo Park and two in San Francisco – as well as a second carpet shop at the San Francisco Design Center. She plans to consolidate the two carpet shops in the new building she is having constructed at 622 Santa Cruz Avenue, a block west of El Camino Real.

Pashmina, is a diamond fibre extricated from the body of the mountain goat “chyangra” or “Capra Hircus”. This goat is a native of the himalayan belt 10,000 ft above sea level….. existence of this nature’s wonder species is very harsh with extremely cold climate and scarce vegetation. Blessed with very thin, short and the softest wool found in the nature. It has an exotically silky texture, weightless lightness but super warmth which when wearing it next to the skin, provides a uniquely tiltilating experience which has been described as Sensual Sublimity by our ancestors.

Pashmina, the finest cashmere wool has been popular for centuries among royalty and other elites as the finest, most luxurious wool in the world. For a thousand years or more, this glorious wool has been prized for its warmth, lightness and durability. For lightness and warmth, pashmina wool is unmatched. Delicate and soft to touch, it caresses the skin. It is not surprising that pashmina has been successful in establishing its uniqueness among fashion wear throught out the planet.


It is a well known fact that the Pashmina fashion is here to stay because of its warmth and lightness. Pashmina from Nepal is becoming popular in Europe, USA, Japan and all over the world.
Now because of existing market potentiality and demand, some business people are engaged in producing products made of sheep wool, merino wool and even nylon on the name of Pashmina. This act may negatively impact the reputation of pashmina, temporarily.
